Using 3 pigments (cochineal, ochre and azurite) and multiple binding media agents, create your own paint and try it on a sample card made out of mixed media paper.

Weather: 75º F (outside) - 70º F (indoors)

For the making of tempera I used egg yolk (only), no water added + pigments. My first pigment was cochineal.

I mixed a small amount of cochineal pigment powder and 2 drops of egg yolk.

The dry and wet mediums were grinded on a glass cutting board using a glass muller (candle stick) and a plastic spatula.

As the grinding of elements continued, the tempera took a very dense texture. The consistency resembled that of a colored lip balm. I placed the tempera and the lip balm side by side and they looked exactly alike. Had I not known which one was the tempera, I would’ve used it as lip balm. There was no odor to the tempera, just a faint earthy smell.

Consistency of the tempera is very viscous and dense.

When using the tempera on the sample card, it was difficult to spread it due to its density. The color was rich, saturated and it dried very glossy.

Texture of tempera was very dense and creamy, similar to lip balm (Glossier cherry balm dotcom) (R)

I mixed a small amount of ochre pigment powder and 2 drops of egg yolk.

The dry and wet mediums were grinded on a glass cutting board using a glass muller (candle stick) and a plastic spatula.

The ochre pigment was a lot easier to grind, it had a smooth consistency and was completely opaque. The grinding of the ochre had a loud sound as well, something I did not experience with the grinding of the cochineal.

I mixed a small amount of azurite pigment powder and 2 drops of egg yolk.

The mixture of glair and cochineal pigment was very easy to combine, only using a plastic spatula and very little effort.

The color was bright but thinner and sheerer in consistency.

Once it was used on the sample card, the paint was easier to spread and very sheer.

For the making of paint using egg white foam (only), no water added + pigments.

I mixed a small amount of each one of the pigment powders and egg white foam.

The dry and wet mediums were grinded on a glass cutting board using a plastic spatula.

Using egg wite foam and pigments was somewhat strange, the density of the foam did not mix with the pigment in a uniform manner. It took a bit more mixing, but once done the colors were very translucent and the consistency similar to cake frosting. Very airy, with not much coverage once used on the sample card.

Weather: 75º F (outside) - 70º F (indoors)

For the making of paints using gum arabic and linseed oil in two separate processes. No water added.

As done previously, I mixed a small amount of each of the pigment powders and 2 drops of gum arabic solution. Separately I mixed each of the pigments with two drops of linseed oil.

The dry and wet mediums were grinded on a glass cutting board using a plastic spatula. Of all the previous paint mixes, these two were the easiest to bind. The pigment performed better when mixed with gum arabic and linseed oil. Once used on the sample card, these two paints were easy to spread, had better coverage and hegemony of color. The strokes of the brush were more consistent and uniform.

Final observations:

Each of the mixes were made separately, using individual droppers and brushes. It makes a difference when mixing and painting with clean brushes, instead of reusing the same brush.

None of the paint mixtures had water, I used the binding media and pigment only.

Out of all the paints, my favorite to make and use were the tempera and linseed oil. Those two had a richer, bolder coverage. The colors were saturated, reflected light with a slight sheen to them and had better coverage than the rest.
